It seems like both BJP and TMC are recalibrating their political positions ahead of all-important Panchayat polls in Bengal. Where TMC did a Brahmin conference, BJP organised a minority convention on Thursday to reach out to a large section of the electorate in Bengal.

Senior BJP leaders including state BJP president Dilip Ghosh and Mukul Roy claimed that BJP was more secular than the TMC because Mamata Banerjee-led TMC was busy appeasing only one particular community.

“While Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan is ‘sabka saath sabka vikas’ Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been following the rule, ‘Muslim ka saath, TMC ka vikas’. This can't continue. In 2019, TMC will get a major jolt and in 2021, the party will cease to exist here. At present she has realised that she has gone overboard with appeasement and had irked members of majority community. Thus she and her leaders are now busy doing damage control and putting up Brahmin sammelan,” Ghosh said, speaking at the rally. He also said that the Mamata government had pretended to be the well-wisher of Muslims here. “She had claimed that she has done a lot for Muslims. Muslims in West Bengal are in one of the worst condition compared to other states. They have been kept away from social, cultural, academic and economical development,” he said.

Addressing the gathering which comprised mostly Muslims, Mukul started off his speech with an ‘Salamalaikum’, the Muslim way of greeting a person and ended his speech saying ‘In Sha Allah’, a trademark style of Mamata while addressing gathering of Muslims.

He said that there has been no development for the minority section during the TMC regime and that Mamata has used them to ascend to power in Bengal. “All the development had been theoretical. There has been nothing in reality. And that too had been so much talked about that it has led to a clash between the Hindus and Muslims,” he said. He also added that ahead of 2011 when the TMC came to power, Mamata had toured the state with the mother of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman telling people ‘Mujhe insaaf chahiye’ (I want justice) for the alleged murder of Rahman and two senior IPS offices were among the accused. “What happened after that? Later those IPS officers were made commissioners of two commissionerates. Again, She had been quiet on the ‘instant triple talaq’ issue because she is unable to assess which group she would be displeasing if she opposed or supported the SC decision in the triple talaq issue,” Roy said.
