Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee took the stage of July 21 Martyrs’ Day rally to hit out at BJP saying that the TMC would support any party which is against the BJP and that it would initiate a BJP Bharat Chharo movement on August 9, marking the launch of Quit India movement against the British on this day in 1942.

Mamata began her campaign for the panchayat election next year and the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 saying that 18 parties had come together in the Presidential election and TMC was with any party which was against BJP. “Bengal is with Soniaji (Sonia Gandhi), Nitishji (Nitish Kumar), with Arvind (Arvind Kejriwal), Laluji (Lalu Prasad), Navinji (Navin Patnaik) and anyone who is in opposition to BJP. A grand alliance will be formed before the Lok sabha polls and BJP will be defeated. From August 9 to 30 there will be a BJP Bharat Chharo movement till the block level. They will not get single Lok Sabha seat from Bengal. Next year when you come back for the 25th year of the Martrys’ Day rally, you should return victorious at all panchayats of the state,” she said.

She referred to the recent cases of lynching by ‘gau rakshaks’ and said that they were ‘gau rakshashas’ in the name of ‘gau rakshaks’. She said that the country was going through a phase which was ‘more than an Emergency situation’. “Not only the rights of minorities are being encroached upon but because of the duplicate Hindus, actual Hindus were also suffering. The BJP people are deciding what others will wear or eat. Even pregnant women are being asked to stay away from eggs,” she said.

She alleged that the BJP was letting Central agencies loose against TMC leaders because they were speaking against the BJP’s misrule. “The Saradha and Narada issues have been going on for 4-5 years now. Why are they not ending it? They think they will malign the party senior leaders by calling them one by one. If our leaders are proved innocent we will file defamation cases for thousands of crores rupees against them. You may not only call 13 of our leaders, there are also 30 lakh more who are ready to go to jail,” Mamata roared.

Training her guns at the CPI(M) too she said that CPI(M) had been secretly helping the BJP in gaining grounds in Bengal. “On the face of it they look like they are opposed to each other but in reality it is a fixed match between the two,” she said.

Talking about the 13 deaths as a result of police opening fire on a Youth Congress rally on July 21,1993 she said that the judicial commission set up to investigate into the matter had submitted its report. “The report clearly says about a conspiracy because of which the firing took place. Those identified behind the firing will not be spared. Of course I believe in political courtesy and because of that I will not touch Jyoti Babu (Jyoti Bose) and Buddhadeb Babu (Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee). Although a monetary compensation of Rs 1.65 lakh to each families of the 13 shot dead had been paid and one of their family members have been given government job, respecting the recommendation of the commission the government will pay Rs 2 lakh more to each of the families. Again warrants against all those who have been falsely implicated in the case, will be withdrawn,” she said.

Later during the day BJP state president Dilip Ghosh and CPI(M state secretary Dr Surjyakanta Mishra conducted separate press conferences countering Mamata’s attack. “On August 9, we will also begin a signature campaign against Mamata asking her to stop appeasement of a particular community. “It will be called TMC Quit Appeasement movement. We will go to households, talk to them and collect their signatures against Mamata,” Ghosh said.

Dr Mishra, on the other hand, said both the TMC and the BJP were same in their approach at the state and Centre. “She talked about 12,000 deaths across the country and the Centre is denying it. We tell her about the farmers’ deaths here in Bengal and she doesn’t agree to those. She has been poaching other parties and now her party is being poached by the BJP. So both of them are playing along the same lines,” Mishra said.
