A speeding Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) allegedly in possession of a local Shiv Sena leader mowed down three school girls in Baramati tehsil. While two girls died on the spot, the third has sustained serious injuries and has been admitted in a hospital.

The incident took place at around 7.30 am when the girls were walking on the side of the road to go to school in Kare Wagaj village on Baramati-Morgaon road in Baramati tehsil, around 115 kilometers from Pune. The deceased girls have been identified as Divya Dnyaneshwar Pawar (12) and Samiksha Manoj Vikar (13).

The SUV which knocked down the girls is owned by local Shiv Sena leader Pappu Mane. A police officer from Baramati taluka police station said, "The investigation is still on whether Mane was behind the wheel. According to preliminary information, three girls were walking towards their school when the car knocked them down."

Following the incident, local villagers gathered at the spot, set the vehicle on fire and held a rasta roko at the accident spot. Local police officials said that around three to four persons were in the SUV when the vehicle knocked down the girls. The local villagers managed to nab one of the occupants and handed him over to the police before beating him up.

According to police officials, the vehicle is in possession of Pappu Mane, but the registration of the vehicle is in the name of Mane's relative. Speaking to DNA, additional superintendent of police Sandeep Pakhale said, "We have summoned Mane for questioning. He has said that he was not present in the vehicle when the accident took place. We are now interrogating him to get the details of the occupants who were present in the vehicle."

It took nearly a couple of hours for police to bring the situation under control. "The angry mob held rasta roko for some time but now the situation is under control," Pakhale added.
