The visiting Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has highlighted how her country has been impacted after New Delhi banned the export of onions globally.

Speaking at a business event, PM Hasina speaking in Hindi said, "Pyaaz ley key dikat ho gaya hamaraey liye. Mujhe malum ni kyn apney pyaz band kar diya. Thoda notice dene se hum dusre jagah se laa sakte the. Achanka apney band kar diya aur hamrey liye ye mushik ban gaya. Aagey... se thoda sa pehle bata dena."

(There is discomfort regarding onion since you have banned the export of onion. You should have given notice so that we can get onion from some other place. You suddenly stopped onion export and it caused a lot of problem to us. Next time tell us in advance)

She jokingly said she has even asked her cook not to put onion in her food.

India banned the export of onions after monsoon rains impacted the harvest leading to increase in prices of the staple food. The ban has impacted price of onion in most of the Asian region.

Indian onions are exported to many countries. Major export markets are Bangladesh, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka & Nepal. New Delhi exported 21,82,826.23 MT of fresh onion to the world worth of Rs 3,467.06 crores during the year 2018-19.

Bangladesh PM Hasina is on a four day India visit with Saturday being the main day of engagement. This is her first visit to India after the massive election victory of December 2018.

PM Hasina is currently on a four-day visit to India. On Saturday the Bangladeshi PM is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India, the world's biggest seller of onions, has banned exports after extended monsoon downpours delayed harvests and supplies shrivelled.
