The metro rail in Benagluru is a boon to travellers in the city who want to beat the traffic. But the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) does impose certain restrictions on those who love to cycle around in the city. The Corporation only allows commuters to take foldable bicycles on the metro and 14-year-old Sanjith Rao was irked by this. The ninth standard student of Shishu Griha Montessori and High School e-mailed officials at the BMRCL but they stated they had some constraints in allowing this. So Sanjith thought it was best he start an online petition to bring about this change.

Sanjith started a petition on change.org and explained the reason behind it. He wrote "The metro is a convenient mode of transportation. But, once an individual gets off the metro, he/she needs to complete that last mile of transport. Getting an auto – rickshaw can be a hassle and walking might also not be convenient. What if they could cover the rest of the distance on their own private bicycle? While that sounds like a great idea, think about this: Are cycles even allowed on the metro? BMRCL only allows foldable cycles that fit through the baggage scanner. So, 99% of the people cannot take their cycles on the metro. Cycling enthusiasts and commuters using non – foldable cycles for their last mile transport and various other reasons will be benefited if these kind of cycles were allowed. In many foreign countries, commuters are allowed to carry their cycles on board. Thus, people can use public transport and greener methods of transportation for their commute and prevent the environment from further getting harmed. This system would also decrease the number of cars on the road, adversely reducing pollution. I feel that this is one of many steps that we can take to make the Earth a cleaner, greener one."

The BMRCL had also mailed him that anything that is carried on the metro should be able to pass through the baggage scanner. Moreover, they did not want any inconvenience caused to other passengers.

Sanjith has got nearly 485 signatures so far. You can see the petition here.
