Five thousand students of Venkat International, St. Ann’s High School & Venus International School in Rajajinagar marked the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2 by creating a new Guinness World Record. Gathered at Sri Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium in the city, the students were all dressed as the father of the nation.

It took more than three hours to assemble all the children at a single venue. “I am delighted to see so many students dressed as Mahatma Gandhi at a single venue. I am very happy to be here,’’ said Praveen Patel, representative of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Expressing happiness over participation of children in large numbers, T Balakrishna, chairman, Venkat International School, has described the event as first of its kind in the country. According to him, the previous record was set by a school in Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu where 2,995 students were dressed as Mahatma Gandhi. “We are very happy to have achieved this feat. The objective of this event is not only to enter Guinness Book of World Records but also to create awareness among these students about Gandhian principles like truth, peace and non-violence,’’ said Balakrishna.

Gopal, a 95-year-old Gandhian from Tamil Nadu was an added attraction for the school children. “I am very happy to be part of this event. I came here at 8 am. I brought breakfast from home and had it here. We visited this stadium yesterday (Thursday) for a rehearsal,’’ said Manav Bafna, a class eight  student of Venkat International School.

Soothing music fills the air
The choir by the students of Venkat International, St. Ann’s High School and Venus International ensured that the venue reverberated with songs on Gandhi. The soothing music was a relief to both the students and the thousands of parents who had accompanied them.

Two-week dance rehearsal
A group of students from St. Ann’s High School came to the event dressed in colourful costumes. They were a part of dance troupe set to perform on the song Mile Sur Mera Tumhara. “We were trained for two weeks by our teacher Mamata who taught us the steps,’’ said Sheril, students of class 9, St. Ann’s High School, Rajajinagar.
