Bangalore-Ernakulam intercity express derails; 10 killed, 18 injured

The train had left Bengaluru at 6:15 am and derailed at 07:35 am between Anekal Road and Hosur on Bangalore City-Salem Section, about 45 km from Bengaluru, Railways said.

The death toll in the train mishap rose to 10 and around 18 passengers were injured, several critically, when nine bogies of the Bangalore-Ernakulam Inter City Express derailed on Friday after a boulder fell on the track. Sources suggest that general compartment coaches number D-7 and D-8 are  the worst affected.

The train had left Bengaluru at 6:15 am and derailed at 07:35 am between Anekal Road and Hosur on Bangalore City-Salem Section, about 45 km from Bengaluru, Railways said.

Sources say that a boulder may have fallen on the track though the exact reason for the derailment can only be established afetr the probe is completed. 

“As per the information received at 14 hours from the spot, 10 persons died and 18 are severely injured. Injured have been taken to Anekal General Hospital, Narayan Hridayalaya and Sparsh Hospitals. Maximum passengers are in Narayan Hridayalaya Hospital and Sparsha Hospital in Bangalore,” a press release from South Western Railway said.

Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said that he is on the way to Bangalore to visit accident site to help all those who are stranded. He also said all possible help will be rendered to families affected and Exgratia will be given as soon as possible.

Taking it to micro blogging site, he tweeted, "I am personally monitoring it and in touch with State and local administration. All senior rail officials are directed by me to be on job."

He further tweeted, "Condolences to all the unfortunate members of the families who lost lives. Directed to provide best possible medical care to the injured."

Prabhu also said that the enquiry has been ordered to fix responsibility. He said, "Ordered enquiry to fix responsibility and for corrective action to prevent such unfortunate accidents. Monitoring action regularly."
