Bandh gets mixed response in Gujarat, 4 more attempt suicide

Parts of Saurashtra witnessed violence on Wednesday, as the Gujarat bandh called by the Dalit community received mixed response in the state. Four more people attempted suicide, three from Dhoraji in Rajkot and one in Gondal, on the third day of the Dalit protests.

Chief minister Anandiben Patel visited Mota Samaliyala village in Una to meet the families of four Dalits who were flogged by gaurakshaks over allegations of killing a cow. She also visited Rajkot, where the four Dalits are admitted.

In Ahmedabad, some of the Dalit-dominated areas saw the effect of the bandh, with school there remaining closed. Except for a few incidents of shops being forced to shut down, the bandh remained largely peaceful.

Amreli and Porbandar saw maximum violent incidents as life came to a standstill in most parts of the two districts. Amreli city saw a complete shutdown. In Dhari taluka, Dalits forced shops to stay open as they have declared a bandh on Thursday.

In Porbandar, a private bus was attacked, after a mob gathered near the collectorate to submit a memorandum. Police van, the state transport depot, and the Rural DysP's office bore the brunt of mob fury, said a source in the police department.

In Surendranagar, a goods train was stopped and Wadhwan area four persons were injured in violence.

In Rajkot city, the strike got mixed response. The administration suspended the BRTS service as a precautionary measure.

Jamnagar, which saw violence on Tuesday night, remained more or less peaceful.

In Patan, a group of protesters pelted stones at a movie theatre, forcing its closure. They also blocked roads, police said.
