Final result:

Adhir Chowdhury has won Baharampur defeating Apurba Sarkar by 80696 votes.

At 8PM, close to the end of counting, Congress's Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury ahead of TMC's David Sarkar by 78 thousand votes.

Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency profile:

Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency is all set for Guru-Shishya fight on April 29, when four-time MP Adhir Chowdhury will contest against TMC MLA Aprurba Sarkar aka David, who till recently was Congress MLA. Adhir Chowdhury has been instrumental in David's steady growth in political arena but the three-time MLA from Kandi is currently at the crossroad with his mentor.

But this battle is much more than that. Baharampur is one of the last bastions of Congress which the TMC hasn't able to breach. Yes, the party did well in Panchayat elections but Congress believes with presence of central forces it will be a different game this time around. Mamata Banerjee and Adhir Chowdhury's hostile relationship is well known. Mamata has deployed her crack lieutenant  Subhendu Adhikary to take down Adhir. Adhikary is crisscrossing Murshidabad district as TMC observer and is looking to end the Congress domination in Baharampur.

Curiously, the Left Front is divided over supporting Adhir Chowdhury. Despite no alliance, the CPI(M) decided that the Left Front wouldn't be filing candidate from Baharampur and will help Adhir'. However, RSP hasn't agreed and have fielded their own candidate Id Mohammad who is a former MLA. A cursory look at Baharampur constituency's history would show why it was difficult for RSP to let go of this seat. RSP has won Baharampur 12 times in the past and barring once in 1984, when Kandi's 'Raja' Atish Sinha won, RSP had the seat under their grasp till 1998. Tridib Chaudhuri of RSP won the seat 7 times. From 1999 though, it has been one-way show with Adhir Chowdhury logging massive wins. In last election, he won against TMC's celebrity candidate Indranil Sen by 3.57 lakh margin. Promothes Mukherhjee of RSP, who is a three-time MP from the seat came third.

This time,CPI(M) is openly canvassing for Adhir Chowdhury. BJP's stocks are a bit weak in this constituency as Krishna Juardar Arya isn't exactly well known in the area. Mamata Banerjee has alleged that there is fixed match between BJP and Congress here and the local RSS organisation is working overtime to ensure Adhir's win. In the last few years, there have been constant rumours of Adhir joining BJP, though the Congress leader has steadfastly denied such speculations.

There is a significant minority population in the area and Mamata Banerjee has pushed the issue of NRC strongly in her speech, The assembly segments under Baharampur are  Burwan, Kandi,Bharatpur,Rejinagar,Beldanga, Baharampur and Naoda. Adhir's margin is almost sure to decrease but will 'Nawab of Murshidabad' hold onto his citadel. The fight is likely to go down to the wire.
