An upscale private hospital that allegedly declared dead a newborn may lose its licence if found guilty, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Saturday. The Delhi government has ordered a probe into Thursday's incident that sparked widespread outrage.

"If the hospital does not work properly, we will cancel its licence. We are waiting for an initial inquiry report. This is a very serious case and we will take strict action against the hospital, if required," said Jain.

Doctors at Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh had allegedly declared the baby dead along with his still-born twin and handed over the bodies to the parents in plastic bags. The father, Ashish Kumar, was on his way to a cremation ground when he noticed moments in one of the bags.

The family alleged that the babies were declared dead after it expressed its inability to pay exorbitant fees for their treatment.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda also directed the Delhi government to look into the matter, after which a probe was ordered and a report sought within three days. A case has been registered under Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the IPC.

The Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has also taken cognizance of the case. "We are investigating the matter," said Dr Girish Tyagi, registrar, DMC.

The hospital said in a statement on Friday, "It has been brought to our attention that a 22-week newborn baby, who was reported to be on life support, was unfortunately handed over without any sign of life by Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh. This baby was one of the twins delivered on November 30 morning. The other baby was stillborn."

"We are shaken and concerned at this rare incident. We have initiated a detailed inquiry, pending which, the doctor concerned has been asked to proceed on a leave immediately. We are in constant touch with the parents and are providing all the needed support," it said.
