Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who visited the Gautam Buddh Nagar district in the state on Monday to investigate the reasons behind increasing count of coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-affected patients despite the lockdown, came down heavily upon the District Magistrate over alleged 'irresponsibility'.

According to reports, when Yogi asked the DM regarding the situation in this region, the latter could not provide the Chief Minister with a satisfactory answer. This is when Yogi reprimanded the DM severely for his 'irresponsibility' and said, "Don't talk nonsense". Stop putting your responsibility on others."

Angry at the rebuke of the Chief Minister, the Gautam Buddh Nagar DM penned a letter to the Chief Secretary seeking leave of three months. According to sources, the DM also told Yogi during the meeting that he works for 18 hours and did not want to live in Noida any longer. There is currently a discussion at the governance-level considering if the DM will have to face action in the form of suspension.

Sources said that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath told the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Anurag Bhargava, and the District Magistrate directly that he was not happy with the arrangements in the district to prevent the COVID-19 spread, promptly asking the officials to show the work that has been done since the alert that was issued two months ago.

One of the cases that came up in the conversation was the issue of contact-tracing of a British national who was found to be COVID-19 positive in the region, which the Chief Minister wasn't too happy with how the responsibility was handled and also with the fact that proper information wasn't communicated at all levels of governance.

Notably, the most number of COVID-19 cases in the state of Uttar Pradesh have been found from Gautam Buddh Nagar, where Noida is situated. So far 37 cases have been reported in the district.

However, government sources have not said anything definitive in this regard. A few reports have pointed out that since the Epidemic Act has been enforced in the state, the earned leave of an officer cannot be allowed.
