B-school students, faculty hit the street for Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan

Responding to the call for prime minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, students and faculty of Welingkar Institute of Management (WeSchool) started a cleanliness audit around Shivaji Park and Siddhivinayak on behalf of the civic body. This apart, the management students and their professors focussed on creating awareness on the issue among the locals over a period of ten days.

Responding to the call for prime minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, students and faculty of Welingkar Institute of Management (WeSchool) started a cleanliness audit around Shivaji Park and Siddhivinayak on behalf of the civic body. This apart, the management students and their professors focussed on creating awareness on the issue among the locals over a period of ten days.

Six teams comprising students, faculty and the staff from the institute visited Shivaji Park area and Siddhivinayak temple areas thrice a day to inspect the cleanliness drive. They were asked to examine and inspect roads, bins, public toilets, collection of household waste, use of plastic bags as well as the upkeep of trees on lanes and internal roads. They also monitored cleanliness of footpaths and dividers as well.

The teams not only carried out the audit based on the 13 parameters defined by the BMC, but also provided the authorities with additional information on spaces in housing societies, shopping areas and abandoned cars, spitting nuisance, lack of proper signage, junked plastic and water logging, broken garbage bins, unused drainage pipes cluttering the area and many more pointers leading to cleanliness.

This drive began on the 7th Jan and ended on 17th Jan. The B-school officials said they would be submitting a comprehensive report combining the observations and evaluation to the BMC, thus setting up an agenda for further action towards a healthy ecosystems and improved quality of life in the city.

Captain V N Kanade, general manager of WeSchool, led the group. Sharad Ughade, assistant commissioner of G North ward, who was instrumental in the initiative, said that the campaign was aimed at making the citizens in the area aware of the efforts taken by the corporation in maintaining day-to-day cleanliness, and also to encourage them to segregate waste and keep the surroundings clean.

Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe, group director, said that the institutions like WeSchool should collaborate with all stakeholders for changing people's mindset and empowering them for better governance, economic prosperity and sustainable environment.
