City autorickshaw union has threatened to protest against the traffic department for allegedly forcing them to put up stickers in autos which contain detail of drivers like his name, address and permit number. The sticker is supposed to be put up behind driver's seat, so that passengers can easily get to know the details of the driver.

On the contrary, the auto union has claimed that the traffic department has taken the initiative to fetch profit to a private company, who will provide the sticker. However, the traffic department has shot down the claims of the union.

Union claims that they have already been displaying licenses and auto permits in their transport. Now, putting up another identity card will not serve extra information to passengers.

"Drivers carry driving license, display coloured photocopy of license and permit and, there is a helpline number mentioned in the back of the auto," said Kasam Mulani, president of Navi Mumbai Auto Rickshaw Federation (NMARF).

Mulani added that the additional identity card will not serve extra to passengers' safety. "They are charging Rs100 for a sticker, which will carry just a few details of the drivers," said Mulani, adding that the traffic officials have been allegedly forcing them to put up the sticker. A few autos have already put up the sticker.

With rising crime across the country, the traffic department held a meeting with autorickshaw unions and discussed about the new sticker for the safety of passengers on December 3. The traffic department also gave a presentation for the initiative.

Arvind Salve, deputy commissioner of police (traffic) said, "The initiative has been taken for the safety of commuters. It is not mandatory for them to put up the sticker in their autos." He added that this is optional, but for the safety of passengers, the drivers should put it up.

Salve also shot down auto union's claim that their officials are forcing drivers to put up the sticker. "I have already instructed my officials, in written to not force, as it is optional," said Salve.

Mulani said that the traffic department should put up such stickers free of cost, if they wish to do it. "They cannot force us, as it is not mentioned in the government resolution. If they continue to force, we will protest in front of traffic department's office in Belapur," said Mulani. While DCP Salve said that anything comes at a price, the sticker costs just Rs100.
