Security was stepped on Thursday at the French Embassy and residences of French diplomats in New Delhi after a string of terror attacks in Paris even as Delhi Police remained on high alert ahead of the visit of US President Barack Obama later this month.

According to a senior police official, the Delhi Police brass has instructed the officials concerned to make special security arrangements at the French Embassy in Chanakyapuri, the Franco-Indian cultural centre of Alliance Française and at the residences of French diplomats in New Delhi district. Security in the Lutyens' Zone also remained tight with barricades put up to track vehicles entering the area.

A mock drill was also conducted at Qutub Minar at around 2 PM in which Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Services and other emergency and disaster management agencies participated to check their preparedness levels. Anti-terror measures were put in place at all vital installations, including IGI airport, railway stations, Metro stations, India Gate and in major markets in south and Old Delhi.

"We are prepared for any eventuality and our HIT and SWAT teams have been deployed at strategic locations. Local area DCPs, ACPs and SHOs have been asked to make a round of their area at least once during the day," said a senior police official.

Security has been heightened in the city in the last month or so after several attacks around the world and intelligence inputs which suggested that Lashkar-e-Toiba may carry out a "spectacular" attack in Delhi ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit for the Republic Day celebrations.

Following an intelligence input that terrorists may target five-star hotels in the city, SWAT teams have been stationed outside premier hotels while special measures were already in place to guard city schools after the attack on an Army school in Peshawar in Pakistan.

Police has also urged Delhiites to report any suspicious activities on the terror helpline number at 1090. The police brass has also asked the Special Cell and Crime Branch to further strengthen their intelligence-gathering system and keep tabs on the movement of suspected individuals. Local police have been instructed to keep a tight vigil and ensure that every anti-terrorism measure was in place.
