Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away on Thursday evening, had several chapters of his glorious life written in Jaipur. His camaraderie with late vice-president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and LK Advani is well-known. Together, the trio established the Bharatiya Janata Party as we know today. And, Jaipur happened to be the nerve centre of their brainstorming over the party's future.

With Shekhawat, who would go on to become the chief minister of Rajasthan, Vajpayee shared a great rapport. They had such a great friendship that the kanyadaan of his daughter was conducted by Vajpayee.

Atal Bihari Vajapyee is survived by his adopted daughter Namita and granddaughter Niharika.

"Shekhawat's daughter Ratan Kanwar was married off in bungalow number 51 on the Sardar Patel Marg on February 3, 1982," a BJP official said.

Party officials recall that Shekhawat had sent an official invite of the wedding to Vajpayee, who stayed in Jaipur for two days for the wedding. At the ceremony, then chief minister Shiv Charan Mathur greeted Vajpayee at the venue.

Shekhawat was the Leader of the Opposition at the time in Rajasthan Assembly. The bungalow was later rechristened the BJP's official headquarters in Jaipur.

Vajpayee would arrive in Jaipur on several occasions. Many times, he stayed at former BJP treasurer Ramdas Agarwal's residence at Kishanpol Bazaar. Till the time Shekhawat was alive, he would make it a point to meet Vajpayee at his New Delhi residence. The late statesman was also very close to Kanhaiya Lal Chaturvedi, who edits the RSS mouthpiece Pathey Kan in Jaipur.
