Prime Minister Narendra Modi is known as brilliant orator, who knows his audience well. He often tweaks his speech to suit the local flavor.

So when the Prime Minister, who also happens to be the Chancellor of Visva Bharti University, addressed the students at the convocation ceremony on Friday, it was quite natural for him to say something in Bangla.

And he chose ‘ekla chalo re’, the world-famous song of Visva Bharti University (previously known as Santiniketan) founder Rabindranath Tagore.

In his short speech, PM Modi spoke about various initiatives such as Atal Tinkering Labs and the ‘RISE’ scheme. He also said Rs 1 lakh crore will be spent to reform the education systeme in the country.

PM Modi along with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina were at Viswa Bharati University this morning to attend the convocation ceremony.

The PM arrived in his chopper at Panagarh in Bardhaman West district around 10am and left for the convocation venue soon after.

He was greeted with a bouquet of flowers by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on his arrival. Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and senior leaders of West Bengal BJP unit were also present at the helipad to welcome the PM.

Both PM Modi and Hasina signed the visitors' book at the university before taking to the dais at the convocation venue.

Earlier in the day, the university witnessed unruly scenes as youths were seen protesting outside the convocation venue over paucity of water, an official said.

The youths alleged that some students fell sick as there were inadequate arrangements for water and other facilities at the venue.

The university authorities, however, said the protesters were outsiders and had nothing to do with the university.

"Some of the protesters were identified and asked to leave the venue. The problem has been taken care of," said a university official.
