At least 22 people were injured as parts of West Bengal were rocked on Tuesday by an earthquake that had its epicentre in Nepal.
"As per reports received so far, eight persons received minor injuries during the earthquake. Of them, three were from Siliguri and five others were from Matigara in north Bengal," state Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat Nabanna. However, reports have now emerged that In South Dinajpur, 14 students have been injured when a railing collapsed due to the earthquake. Tremors were felt in Kolkata too, though there was no loss to property or life.

Meanwhile, the district magistrates and police superintendents of all districts have been asked to open control rooms with a central control room at the state secretariat under direct supervision of the Disaster Management department.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, now in Bankura, appealed to the people to remain calm and assured that her government would provide all support. "Earthquake has once again struck many parts of our state and other parts of the country and abroad," the CM wrote on her Facebook wall. "I appeal to our people to maintain calm. Our government will provide all support," she posted.
"Round-the-clock Control Room has been opened at Nabanna and the numbers are 1070 and 22143526. We are with all our brothers and sisters," Banerjee wrote. Metro railway services were temporarily suspended due to the tremor from 12.48 PM. Normal train services resumed at 1.15 PM, Metro railway sources here said.
