At an extended core committee meeting of the Trinamool Congress, party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at former party MP Mukul Roy calling him ‘gaddar’ or traitor.

“We are unable to contest elections properly at Tripura because of the paucity of funds. Parties like BJP which is in power at the Centre and Congress have huge amount of money. Even CPI(M) had amassed a lot of wealth which they are still spending. I am proud to say that we don’t have a lot of funds at hand. Moreover, it is for a ‘gaddar’ within our party who had joined BJP recently and had also engineered a defection of our party leaders in Tripura, to BJP,” she said. Roy had joined BJP in November 2017.

She said that even when she was with the NDA or UPA government, she used to be petrified of cabinet meetings. “I used to think that the Centre would raise price, shut down some industries or adopt some anti-people policies. Here in Bengal people have the confidence that the TMC government will not resort to raising prices or tax to generate revenue. That is why we are so popular here,” Mamata added.

She asked party leaders to go all out ahead of the panchayat elections asking leaders to complete all the incomplete welfare projects for rural Bengal ahead of the elections.

“There should be meeting, rallies and processions every weekend before board exams begin, against the Centre regarding issues relating 12,000 farmers’ suicide in Maharashtra, non-withdrawal of Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) so far, why railway projects have been withdrawn and inflation,” she said.

She asked party members to be active on social networking sites to counter ‘fake and paid news’. “Parties like BJP are active on Facebook because they have hired people experts against a huge amount of money. We don’t have money but we have dedication. I ask you to counter fake and maligning news politically without resorting to profanity,” Mamata added.
