Assembly Elections 2017 | High voter turnout in Goa, isolated clashed in Punjab: EC

As polling ended in the states of Goa and Punjab, Umesh Sinha and Sandeep Saxena addressed a press conference on Saturday giving out details of the elections that took place.

Goa experienced a high voter turnout of 83% as compared to 81.8% in the 2012 assembly elections. 

Also, as a measure to empower women and disabled, a polling station each was completely managed by them. Also, as a part of cancer awareness, a pink polling station was also introduced.

Giving details of the seizures, Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha said, "2.24 crore cash, more than 75,000 litres liquor worth more than 1 crore, 6 kgs of drugs and narcotics worth 34.22 lakh were seized in Goa."

At polling station number 8 in Margao constituency (South Goa) re-polling has been called on Sunday, due to faulty procedure.

Webcasting was carried out both in Goa and Punjab, in Goa it was 100%, while around 3,700 polling stations in Punjab had webcasting facility.

In Punjab, 1,145 candidates, including 81 women and a transgender contested the elections. Deputy election commissioner Sandeep Saxena said that a case of violence took place in Lalu Ghuman village in Tarn Taran district. The incident took place when supporters of two political parties clashed, wherein one person sustained bullet injury.  EC also informed that FIR has been lodged in the case, and the main accused has been grounded. 

59 incidents of paid news were reported in Punjab, whereas 58.02 crore cash, 12.43 lakh litres liquor worth 13.34 crore, 2598 Kgs of drugs and narcotics worth 18.26 crore were seized.

The voter turnout in Punjab was 70%, whereas that in 2012 was 78.06%.
