After the Congress, the AAP and Patidar leader Hardik Patel expressed apprehension that the EVMs may have been tampered, the Chief Election Commissioner AK Joti on Monday assured that the electronic voting machines (EVMs) cannot be tampered with.

The CEC said, “Questions being raised about EVMs have already been answered by us in the media. VVPATs were there in every polling stations in Gujarat, which enabled voters to see whom they voted for, so issues being raised aren’t right. I assure that EVMS cannot be tampered with.” Joti added that the Gujarat Chief Electoral officer had made all arrangements at all places in counting halls in the state.

Former Chief Election Commissioner Naveen Chawla also asserted that political parties or candidate tended to cry foul and blame the electronic voting machines (EVMs) when they are losing the elections. "I have observed that when a political party or a candidate lose, they tend to blame the machine and I think that's unfair," Naveen Chawla told ANI.

He added that people should have faith not only in the Election Commission (EC) but also the courts, who have called the EVM has one of the technological wonders.
"We must have faith in the EC and also in the courts as all of them have examined different aspects of EVM as well," said the former CEC.

Even Bihar CM Nitish Kumar mocked at Opposition for criticising EVMs. "Some may criticise the EVMs out of fear of defeat, but the EVMs have made elections transparent and impartial. Now, nobody can deprive anybody of the right to cast votes," Kumar, who has predicted a comfortable majority for the BJP in Gujarat, tweeted in Hindi.

According to early trends, the Congress was giving tough fight to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in both the states.
The counting of votes for 68 Assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh and 182 constituencies in Gujarat began at 8 am today.
The hill state went to polls on November 9 while elections were held in two phases in Gujarat on November 9 and 14 respectively.
