Assam to set up Women, Child Development Agency: CM Tarun Gogoi

While hoisting the National Flag on occasion of the 66th Republic Day celebrations in Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said a Women and Child Development Agency will be set up in the state for improving overall condition of the women and children.

Gogoi said, "a Women and Child Development Agency will be created to make focused efforts in order to improve the overall condition of women and children. The civil society and the government must work together to fulfil this national goal." He also said the government has framed guidelines for one-stop crisis centre 'Nirbhaya' for rescue and rehabilitation of women in distress.

"A state resource centre for women has been operationalised under the Women Development Council sponsored by National Mission for Empowerment of Women (NMEW). The government has also decided to provide financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to mother of the girl child in addition to the existing provision of Rs 5,000 to the girl child," Gogoi said.

He said the government will also take up a nutrition mission to ensure sufficient nutrition levels for people, especially women and children.

"Our government is keen on the overall development of women, children, persons with disabilities, senior citizens and infirm, who need special care and intervention, and in ensuring gender equality. We can neither evade nor abandon this commitment towards gender equality, for the price of neglect will be high," he added.

The Chief Minister informed the government has already constituted the State Committee of Senior Citizens and the Senior Citizen Welfare Council, besides formulating rules for maintenance of senior citizens.

Stating that providing quality health-care facilities to all sections of people is a major priority, he said government is focusing on reduction of maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate of the state although these are already falling in recent times.

"Construction of a new 200-bedded cancer hospital at an estimated cost of Rs 50 crore and a 375-bedded super speciality hospital building at an estimated cost of Rs 127 crore at GMCH, Guwahati (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital) are in progress," Gogoi said.

Talking about tourism sector, the Chief Minister said the number of tourists have increased from 10 lakh in 2001 to 44 lakh last year. He also said population of rhinos and tigers in the state are increasing. "Tiger population increased from 70 in 2006 to 167 in 2014," he added.

On cleanliness, Gogoi said the government has launched a programme called MANASA with central focus on sanitation, personal hygiene and cleanliness. "I have noticed that there is a marked change in the attitude of people towards cleanliness today. It shall be our endeavour to ensure a certain standard of cleanliness across all towns and villages of the state," he said.

He also sought cooperation of people in this exercise during the next year. "Our government is also implementing a programme to construct individual household latrines for BPL households and APL households, school toilets and Anganwadi toilets on a mission mode," Gogoi said. The Chief Minister also informed that 41.67 lakh rural households were provided job cards and a total of 140.44 lakh mandays were created so far during 2014-15.
