Assam: IED blast near police station in Goalpara; 2 dead

3 policemen and 20 others have been reported injured.

An IED blast took place on Monday evening near a police station in Dhudhnoi, Goalpara district in Assam. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi was in Goalpara on Monday addressing a rally ahead of the elections. Assam had also witnessed the first phase of polling on Monday. 

Assam ADGP confirmed that two have died, 3 policemen and 20 others have been injured in the blast. The ADGP also told ANI that the explosive was placed inside a dustbin. The injured are being taken to a government hospital, he said. 

According to our sources, the blast took place near the BJP election office at around 7.30 pm. 

Police said that the blast could be the handiwork of ULFA (Independent) and someway related to disturb the peaceful poll process in the State.

The deceased has been identified as Bapan Saha, a local resident of the village. Hardcore ULFA (I) leader Dristi Rajkhowa led a team of ULFA ultras to carry out this blast at the village, police added.
