Amid raging political debate over the citizenship test, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has called for NRC exercise across India.

Mukhi said that NRC must be conducted in every single state across the country. According to him the exercise would help in India’s security.

‘Central government has right to know about the foreigners staying in the state or country. It will be better if every state has NRC prepared, they should not only prepare NRC rather they should update it with every census, this will ensure full proof security in the country, Mukhi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Defending NRC, Mukhi said that it was being done ‘as per the wishes of Assamese. ‘Draft of NRC is historical for Assamese people as it has been done as per the Assam accord.’

About the exclusion of over 40 lakh people in the draft list, Mukhi said that, ‘many people are worried over non-inclusion of their names in NRC. I assure them that anyone who is an Indian their name will certainly be there in final NRC report.’

The draft list of Assam NRC has sparked major debate across India. While BJP has been defending the exercise, Opposition parties such as the Congress and Trinamool Congress have been slamming the move.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is the most prominent dissenting voice on the NRC issue. In Delhi, the Chief Minister had said that the Assam NRC will spark ‘civil war and bloodbath’ in India.

The issue has rocked Parliament with Opposition protesting against NRC in both Houses.

On Wednesday, Trinamool Congress lawmaker Arpita Ghosh quoted George Orwell's novel "1984" to accuse the government of carrying out surveillance of citizens through Aadhaar and now using the NRC to force people out of their lands.

Rajya Sabha failed to conduct any business besides the Question hour on Wednesday as the opposition benches protested vehemently when Shah rose to speak up on NRC when the house reconvened at 2 p.m. after seeing two adjourments.
