As the deadline for the upgradation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam heats up, CM Sarbananda Sonowal met home minister Rajnath Singh on Monday to discuss NRC as well as the Naga Framework Agreement.

Sonowal met Singh at his residence, in the presence of health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, PWD minister Parimal Suklabaidya, irrigation minister Ranjit Dutta and agriculture minister Atul Bora. Speaking to reporters after his meeting, Sonowal said the NRC upgradation process is being carried out on a priority basis and genuine citizens have nothing to worry about.

However, sources close to the CM said the closed-door meeting, held unusually in the home minister’s residence, was to convey to him that the state will be helpless in case any riot breaks out either in the case of the NRC upgradation or in case the Naga Framework compromises the state’s border.

Sonowal, however, told reporters that the “territorial integrity of Assam” will not be compromised at any cost.

“Assam’s map will not be tampered and the dignity of the people of the state will be upheld,” he said.

On the other hand, civil society organisations, including members of the Delhi Action Committee for Assam (DACA), Jamiat Ulama-E-Hind, political analyst Hiren Gohain, Sitaram Yechury, Yogendra Yadav, etc., convened in Delhi to protest against the changing of certain norms in the process. Panchayat certificates, earlier used for verification in the NRC process, was struck down by Gauhati High Court this year; the Jamiat has approached the Supreme Court challenging the order.

Jamiat Ulama-E-Hind president Maulana Syed Arshad Madani said close to 48 lakh women could be affected in Assam. “We urge the government to not make this another Myanmar,” said Madani.
