Three assailants bit off a chunk of a 29-year-old man's nose in Old Delhi on Thursday night after brutally assaulting him in a road rage case.

The incident took place near Novelty Cinema at Lahori Gate area on Thursday when Aman Gupta, a businessman, left his shop around 9 pm, said a police officer. Aman, a resident of Ghazibad in Uttar Pradesh, was to get married on March 4.

In his complaint, Aman told the police that the incident took place when he was taking a U-turn towards Novelty Cinema since there was heavy traffic near Pul Mithai. While he was taking the turn, three men – Vishal Pandey, Dheeraj and Vipin Mehra – allegedly stopped his vehicle and told him that he was driving on the wrong side, said a police officer.

They allegedly started abusing and thrashing him, and then Dheeraj came forward and bit off the right portion of Aman's nose, he said. They threatened to kill him if he reported the matter, he added.

After they fled the spot, Aman called up his brother, Pankaj, and he admitted Aman to the Sant Parmanand Hospital and later to the Fortis Hospital, said the officer. At the hospital, doctors told them that if they can get the missing portion of the nose, it can be stitched. His brother came back to the spot and found it. Aman was later discharged from the hospital.

The police have registered a case under Sections 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code and arrested the accused on Friday but later they got bail.

Strangely, Deputy Commissioner of Police Jatin Narwal under whose jurisdiction took place opposed the bail of the three accused on Friday. On Saturday, Special Commissioner of Police Dependra Pathak said that the matter is very serious in nature and more sections under Indian Penal Code will be added in the case.
