Students of Allahabad University went on a rampage, indulging in heavy brick-batting and torching police vans and other vehicles to vent their grouse against the University administration's order to vacate hostels by June 12, for summer break.

Students gathered in the Union Hall and later in the campus raised slogans and demanded the withdrawal of the order as many of them were preparing for competitive and other exams. When the University refused to withdraw the order and warned that it would use force if need be, students took to streets and turned violent.

A police jeep, a bus and several other vehicles were set ablaze by the agitated students. Senior police officials rushed to the University ensure that the violence does not spread to other areas. They resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob. Several students and police personnel were injured. Later, the police raided hostels to detain trouble-makers, but by then majority of the students had fled. The Superintendent of Police Brijesh Srivastava said that the situation was under control.

After the violence, the district administration convened a meeting with the varsity administration to reach a compromise with student leaders. Succumbing to students' pressure, it was decided in the meeting to allow students to continue living in the hostel.
