Bucking the initial trends, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani won the Rajkot West Assembly seat in the Gujarat Election results  on Monday.

The early trends had shown Rupani trailing to Congress' Indranil Rajguru.

Ahead of the Gujarat verdict, Rupani sounded confident and had said that the BJP will form the government in the state again.

"The results are going to be in BJP's favour and the party will form Government in Gujarat; people of the state have chosen development" Rupani was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Pitted against Rajguru, one of the wealthiest leader in the fray, Rupani bucked the anti- incumbency factor and the Patel agitation that could have tilted the balance.

Gujarat has 26 parliamentary constituencies and 182 assembly constituencies.

A total of 977 candidates were in the fray in the first phase of elections, out of which 57 were women candidates and over 2.22 crore people took part in the election to decide their fate. While in the second phase, 851 candidates fought, out of which 69 women candidates contested.
