Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Sabarmati today, but not as an election campaigner but as a voter exercising his franchise.

As Gujarat votes for the final phase of the Assembly elections today, Sabarmati's Ranip locality is gearing up for its star voter.

PM Modi, who earlier today, dedicated INS Kalvari at the Gateway of India in Mumbai is expected to reach Sabarmati somewhere around noon.

Apart from the Prime Minister, other big names who cast their votes in the second phase were BJP President Amit Shah, senior party leader LK Advani, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

"(PM) Modiji will cast his vote at a poll booth in the Nishan High School in Ranip locality of Sabarmati. (LK) Advani will cast his vote at the Hindi School poll booth in Khanpur and (Arun) Jaitley at the Chimanbhai Institute in S G Highway," a BJP release said.

The second phase voting is underay in central and north Gujarat. Over 2 crore voters are cating their ballot to decide the fate of 851 candidates in the fray for 93 seats across 14 districts in the state.

Prominent candidates in the fray for today's battle include state deputy chief minister Nitin Patel, who is contesting from Mehsana, Alpesh Thakor (Radhanpur), and Jignesh Mevani (Vadgam).

In Maninagar, the constituency once represented by Prime Minister Naredra Modi, Congress has given ticket to foreign- educated young face Sweta Bhrambhatt against BJP's sitting MLA Suresh Patel. Modi had vacated the constituency after becoming the PM in 2014.

The first phase of voting for the 182-member house, held on December 9, covered 89 seats.

The election is being seen as a "prestige battle" for Prime Minister Modi and a litmus test for the leadership of Congress President-elect Rahul Gandhi.

The battlefield Gujarat which witnessed a vitriolic campaign goes into the decisive phase today, in the elections being viewed as precursor to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
