Tourists and artefact enthusiasts visiting the National Museum will now be able to access details of the artefacts with a click of the smart phone. Artefacts and antiquities housed at the apex museum will now be aided by a quick response (QR) code, which will contain several details about it.

The initiative, launched by Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism (Independent Charge) Dr Mahesh Sharma on Wednesday, will be tested at the museum's bronze gallery initially. "This is an initiative to start the process the digitisation of artefacts. If this proves to be successful, it will be replicated in the museums across the country," said Sharma.

The QR code, called the "e-guide (Audio-Visual) app", is currently available on android phones only, and will load an audio-video presentation of over 10 to 25 seconds on the details of the artefacts. The place from where the artefact was sourced, the date and period of its manufacture, the elements that were used to make it, and what does the artefact signify are some of the details that will be loaded. A message about upholding "swachhata" will also be part of the presentation.

A ministry official, present at the event said that the app, once downloaded, will not require any internet to function. "The museum will provide the internet facility to run the app, and we will install routers across the museum," said the official.

The introduction of the QR code has also led to the ministry to discuss the use of radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags on artefacts, so that the can be tracked if they are stolen by smugglers. A ministry official said that discussions have been held on the matter, and several proposals are under consideration at the moment.
