Army's social networking help in rescue operation

Army chief General Dalbir Singh on Wednesday took stock of the relief and rescue operation in the flood hit areas of Kashmir valley.

While reiterating army's commitment to continue with relief operation 'till the last person is rescued, army chief said that troops will continue to evacuate people in distress and provide relief.

Considering communication and connectivity as a major problem in the flood hit areas of valley, the army has provided satellite phones to the state administration.

According to army, additional nine satellite phones and 100 Mobile Cell Communication Sets were distributed to the district administration officials for coordinating the relief effort. Ten STD booths are planned to be set up, 30 generator sets with mobile charging stations are being air lifted from Chandigarh to Srinagar. Only one mobile service provider is being assisted to revive mobile services from tower at Barzula and satellite connectivity is being provided by airlifting the Base Transmitting Station of BSNL from Kargil to Srinagar, army officials claim.

More than 20,000 army personnel have been deployed along with 80 medical teams. So far, army claims to have rescued over 58,000 persons and around 10,000 have been provided necessary medical assistance.

So far, more than 9,500 persons have been rescued from Srinagar and 2,000 persons have been provided shelter in Badamibagh Cantonment. Nearly, 355 persons requiring immediate medical attention have been evacuated by Army Aviation Helicopters till now.

Meanwhile, Indian army's flooded with thousands of request through social media for seeking assistance for the stranded persons. Like, army's Facebook and Twitter handle have got more than 15,000 messages from relatives and friends of stranded people.

On Tuesday, army's Facebook page, a message about an elderly couple from Delhi were stuck in a Pahalgam hotel, who had gone there as tourist. Soon, Srinagar based 15 corps was informed about it and couple was rescued.
