After five days of intense search, Army rescuers pulled out the body of one of the five missing soldiers from the mounds of snow along the Line of Control (LoC) in Naugam sector of North Kashmir's Kupwara district. Massive rescue and search operations are on to locate four other soldiers.

Sepoy Koushal Singh of 20 Dogra regiment was part of a two-member Operational Team which was swept away by massive snow slide at high altitude area of the Naugam sector along the LoC on Tuesday.

"Concerted efforts of the specially equipped Avalanche Rescue Teams, which have continued despite the inhospitable terrain and weather conditions, have led to the recovery of mortal remains of the martyr on Saturday," said an Army spokesman.

Son of soil sepoy Koushal Singh hailed from Batla Deonia, a village in Samba district of Jammu division. The 19-year-old had donned uniform last year and is survived by his parents and siblings.

Massive avalanches had swept away Army bunkers at two different places on Tuesday. The first incident had occurred at Kanzalwan sub-sector of Gurez in the LoC when a snow avalanche swept away a high altitude 'Mani Post' in Bagtoor area. Three army jawans, who were manning the post were swept away by the avalanche and continue to remain untraceable. The second incident occurred in Naugam sector along the LoC when two soldiers were swept away by snow slide.

For the last five days army rescuers are busy in mammoth search and rescue operations to locate five missing soldiers in the huge mounds of snow in Gurez and Naugam sectors along the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir.

Inclement weather and poor visibility in high altitude areas is also hampering the search and rescue operations. Upper reaches and high altitude areas have been receiving heavy snowfall in the last five days.

Army has pressed Specialized Avalanche Rescue Teams (ARTs) into service and moved special equipment to the site to trace out the missing soldiers. Specially trained sniffer dogs too have been brought in to help the soldiers in the search and rescue operations. Tones of snow has accumulated at both the places and army rescuers are digging deep to locate the missing soldiers.
