Two days before Independence Day, an army man in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh was lynched by a mob from whom he rescued a girl from being sexually harassed, reports CNN-IBN.

On August 13, Thursday, Lance Nayak Ved Mitra Chaudhary managed to save a girl from a group of men who were sexually harassing her. The 31-year old army man was able to overpower the unruly men and forced them to run away.

The girl said to the TV channel that four to five men were 'teasing' her. "...my father, brother and the soldier intervened (during the harassment). The soldier got slapped and a fight broke out," she added.

However, within minutes those men returned with accomplices and beat him up with rods and sticks. Chaudhary suffered serious injuries and succumbed to them.

Local residents had protested against the incident and demanded action against the accused. The men involved in the incident have been arrested, reports ANI.
