Security forces achieved a major success on Sunday when they killed two top Pakistani Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) fidayeens who were part of same group that carried out the suicidal attack on the artillery unit at Panzgam last month.

One of the slain ultra was one who had managed to escape after suffering injuries in the 35 minute-long counter militant operation at Panzgam.

Three soldiers including 26-year-old Captain Ayush Yadav were killed and five other ranks injured in the Uri-style fidayeen attack on the army garrison at Panzgam village near the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on April 27. Two fidayeens were later killed in the counter offensive and another was injured who had escaped from the spot.

“We have found yet-to-heal wounds on one of them which is indicative of a likely involvement with the Panzgam attack. We have found some other evidence as well that confirm their involvement in Panzgam incident,” said Colonel Kuldeep Singh, commanding officer of 21 Rashtriya Riffles,.

“These terrorists were part of the same group that carried out the fidayeen attack on the army camp in Kupwara. Were they part of that attack, I do not know?” SP Vaid, Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, told DNA.

The terrorists were killed after a joint team of 21 Rashtriya Riffles and Jammu and Kashmir police launched an operation following inputs about the presence of ultras in Handwara.

Police said when security forces were zeroing in on the target, terrorists opened fire. Two LeT terrorists were killed in the gunfire.

In a separate incident, three persons were injured in a mysterious blast at Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
