Anti-hijacking force averted a major security breach at the Srinagar international airport on Monday when they arrested an Army jawan, posted near the Line of Control (LoC), who was trying to smuggle out two live grenades on New Delhi-bound plane.

"Yes. It's (the arrest of jawan) right. A first information report (FIR) has been lodged. We are looking into it... action will be taken as per law," said SP Vaid, director general of police, Jammu and Kashmir.

Posted in the garrison town of Uri near LoC, Bhupal Mukhia of 17 JAK RIF was arrested after two live grenades were found in his baggage during the routine checking and X-ray at the airport.

Police sources said Bhupal was proceeding on leave to his home in Darjeeling via Delhi when he was caught at the Srinagar International Airport. "He had carried the grenades all through from Uri. He was supposed to carry the grenades up to Delhi," said a police officer.

The jawan reportedly told the police that the grenades were given to him by a senior officer. "We are looking into his revelations. He has named a senior officer who told him to carry grenades to Delhi. We are not taking his statement at face value," said an officer.

After preliminary questioning he was handed over to the police for detailed interrogation.

"We want to know how grenades landed into his hands. Every bullet and grenade is accounted for in the forces. How he got the grenades remains to be seen," said an officer.

Army also promised action against the erring jawan as per the law. "The matter is under investigation," said Colonel Rajesh Kalia, defence spokesperson at Srinagar.
