As the nation pays tributes to valour of the bravehearts, here are five interesting facts that everyone must know:

1: Why January 15? Every year, the Indian Army celebrates the Army Day on January 15. It is because on this day in 1949, Indian Army got its first chief. Lieutenant General KM Cariappa took over as the reins of the armed force as first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.

2: How many men and women are working in Indian Army? The Indian Army is the third largest army in the world after the US and China. There are approximately 13 lakh men and women working for the Indian Army. What’s more important is the fact that India has the largest volunteer army in the world. Our soldiers are all willing to sacrifice their lives in the line of duty.

3: While many of us may have seen the mighty Arjun Tanks on the Rajpath, do you know how tanks Indian Army has? There are more than 4,000 tanks, 6,000 plus armoured fighting vehicles and nearly 1,000 artillery guns.

 

4: The Siachen Glacier under the Indian Army's control is the highest battlefield in the world. It is situated 5000 metres above sea level. Troops are deployed at a height of up to 22,000 feet around the year in Siachen in sub-human conditions and holds a perfect record in all conflicts in that region. 

5: The 61st Cavalry Regiment of the Indian Army is said to be the largest non-ceremonial horse-mounted cavalry unit in the world.
