Army chief General Bipin Rawat will be visiting Ladakh on a three-day trip starting Sunday and is expected to review troop deployment and ground situation in the wake of the recent clash between Indian and Chinese troops near Pangong Lake.

On Saturday, a video of the scuffle was trending on social media cites, clearly showing troops from both sides involved in physical combat and stone-pelting on the banks of the lake. The video was undated and the Army did not comment on the authenticity of it.

The incident took place on August 15 and the following day there was a brigade-level meeting to discuss strengthening of peace mechanism.

General Rawat will be briefed by senior commanders to discuss strategy to control future incursions from the Chinese side and take stock of the ground situation of Eastern Ladakh.

The Army chief is scheduled to visit Leh for the Presidential Colours ceremony on Monday. President Ram Nath Kovind will present the Colours to the Ladakh Scouts.

Indian and Chinese troops have been involved in a two-month standoff in Doklam — a tri-junction bordering India, China and Bhutan. The standoff was triggered after Indian troops stopped the Chinese from building a road in Doklam, a disputed site between Bhutan and China. Beijing claims it to be Chinese territory.

India stated strategic reasons and agreements to maintain status quo as the reason for intervening.

The Ministry of External Affairs also confirmed the Ladakh incident of August 15 on Friday.

Taking stock

General Rawat will take stock of the security preparedness along China border.
