The romance between celluloid and politics is an old one. On Tuesday afternoon, Bollywood personality Arjun Rampal paid a visit to the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters, amidst indications that he may add to the party's star quotient in the assembly elections.

"I have come here to extend my support to the party because I believe that the steps that the Modi government is taking like demonetization and Swacch Bharat are good," Rampal said after meeting BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya.

Another actor Jackie Shroff is also likely to extend his support to the BJP, sources said. In the past too, the BJP has had its share of Bollywood stars, who are crowd pullers in election campaigns, irrespective of their regional connections. Hema Malini, Paresh Rawal and Kiron Kher are Lok Sabha MPs from the party.

It was not clear what role Rampal or Shroff would play for the party. "I am not a politician, not here for politics. I am here to see how I can extend my support for the BJP," the 44-year old actor, model, producer told reporters.

Interestingly, his 2016 release Rock On 2 was hit by demonetization. However, his next release Kahaani 2 did well at the box office.

Though born in Jabalpur, he is from a Punjabi family, with a Sikh grandfather who was in the army and a Dutch grandmother.
