The West Bengal health department submitted its investigation report regarding the alleged medical negligence of Apollo Hospital, to Nabanna, the state secretariat on Friday.

Sources said that the six-member team of doctors, which was looking in to the case, said in their report that not only was there gross negligence in terms of medical treatment but also in case of billing which led to the death of Sanjay Roy, a resident of Dankuni in Hooghly district, on February 23.

“While the family members of Roy told that the operation had been successful, probe report said that the death was caused owing to excessive bleeding,” a source said. He also said that there had been several discrepancies in terms of billing. “Four major anaesthesia was shown in the bill whereas in effect there was only one local anaesthesia used. Consultation fees of several specialists were added whereas the doctors had not attended him,” he said.

Five officials, including four doctors, were summoned on Friday at Phoolbagan PS, which was investigating the case, for further questioning. Police sources said that several doctors and other administrative staff members would be called for questioning.

Family members of Roy demanded death penalty for offenders. “We have not yet got any official confirmation of the report but if it is true what the media says, then it is for them that my husband had died and those responsible for it should get death penalty. Doctors had said with a smile that the operation had been very successful and that the bleeding had stopped. They are thieves and they have started a business of killing people and blackmailing family members of patients,” she said.

Roy, after meeting with an accident, had been admitted with injuries on his chest and stomach to Apollo Hospitals on February 16 at 2.10 pm. After seven days at the hospital, when the bill escalated to over Rs 7 lakh, his family members decided to shift him to the state-run SSKM Hospital. He was shifted there on February 23 at 9.30 pm and died later that night.
