Another Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader sparked controversy on Thursday with his comments on rape. Addressing a crowd at his constituency, TMC MLA from Diamond Harbour Deepak Haldar, stated, "As long as the Earth exists, there will be rapes."
The comments have received severe condemnation from various political leaders. Congress' Manish Tewari stated, "It is an absolutely insensitive remark by Trinamool MLA". "The fact is that public representatives need to be not only restrained in their utterances but more importantly need to play a positive role in creating a climate where there is safety for women," Tewari said.
National Commission for Women chairperson Mamata Sharma too has demanded that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suspend the erring leader his "insensitive" remark. "The Chief Minister of Bengal being a woman herself and these recurrent derogatory remarks by TMC men is very unfortunate. The CM has never looked into such issues. These men should be suspended from the party. Mamata Banerjee should take some steps," she said.
Haldar, however, later clarified that his intent was to raise awareness. "Please let the journalists not take these comments out of context. Why did I say this? We don't support rape... I said this because it is a social evil. It is not possible for Mamata Banerjee alone to solve it. It is not possible for me or anyone of us alone... all of you must take a collective decision and where such incidents happen, you must protest," Haldar said, according to Zee News.
In an earlier instance, TMC leader Tapas Pal was caught on video threatening rival party workers women with rape. The entire video has captured Pal making threats of violence against CPM workers. He even brags about about being a gunda (thug) and carrying a revolver. 'I move around with a revolver. I will pull the trigger myself. 'I have been a gunda. I have fooled around myself', he is seen yelling at the crowd.
