This comes a day after statues were desecrated in two more districts of Uttar Pradesh – Etah and Ferozabad – despite Chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s stern warning to keep a check on such incidents.
Tension prevailed in the area when Dalits in the area demanded to erect a boundary wall around the statue and members of upper castes opposed the move. Timely intervention by the police, however, saved the situation from taking a violent turn.
Another statue of Dr Ambedkar was vandalised in Nagla Nande village of Sirsaganj in Ferozabad district on Thursday by unidentified miscreants. Agitated Dalits and BSP workers gathered in large number and raised anti-government slogans. Rising tempers cooled down when police and district administration assured to replace the damaged statue with a new one. The new statue was on way from Shikohabad.
Angry over the recent incidents of desecration of B R Ambedkar's statues, BJP MP from Bahraich Savitribai Phule demanded that cases of treason be filed against those indulging in such acts.
"Cases of treason must be registered against those found desecrating, vandalizing or damaging the statues or busts of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar.
The spate of vandalism of statues of iconic leaders and ideologues in different parts of the country began with the razing down of Vladimir Lenin's statue in Tripura, and Periyar's statue in Tamil Nadu.
A statue of the pro-Tamil movement leader, Periyar, was also beheaded by unidentified persons in Pudukkottai.
