Stirring up a fresh controversy, a religious leader on Tuesday said Hindus should give up the mentality of having one child so that the nation can have more people for its service.

Bal Mukundacharya of Dakshinamukhi Balaji dham in Hathoj said, "Hindus have adopted the 'one child' concept because they are afraid of expenses. If all go for the 'one child' concept, so where the people to serve the army and the nation will come from?"

He was talking to reporters after attending the Sant Samagam convention in Jaipur, which was addressed by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat among others. His comments came weeks after BJP MP from Unnao Sakshi Maharaj said every Hindu woman must produce at least four children to "protect" the religion.

Sikar MP Sumedhanand, who also attended the convention, said the meet discussed ways to strengthen harmony in the society.
