Days after the case of Rizwan Khan being rendered jobless because of his religion came to the fore, a new case has come to light about a Muslim girl being driven out of a building she resided in, on similar grounds.

Misbah Qureshi, a PR professional, was asked to move out by her broker because the builder does not approve of Muslims staying in Sanghvi Heights, Wadala.

Misbah, who has lived in the city for five years and is currently residing in Bandra, said, "I have stayed in Mira Road, Malad, Kandivli before this. On April 6, a day before I was to move into my Wadala home, the broker asked me not to as the builder does not allow Muslims to stay there,

When questioned about the broker being uninformed about the issue beforehand, she said, "The flat was taken from a link on Facebook. This one had two girls and one boy living there. I was replacing the boy, whom I paid Rs23,000 for the same which he will refund by June. The issue of my religion cropped up when I insisted on having my name in the agreement. The owners of the flat stay abroad, and the broker seems to be taking care of the flat. When he got to know that I am a Muslim, he told me not to move in or to sign an NOC stating that if there is any problem, the broker and builder are not to blame." She also feels that had she not insisted on her name to be inserted in the agreement, she may have been living there comfortably now and her broker would not have asked her to move out by May 10.

dna tried contacting the office of the builder and the broker, but to no avail. Eknath Khadse, minister of minority affairs, condemned the issue, saying, "The state government will enquire into the matter and take appropriate action as anyone in the country is free to live anywhere."

Shehzad Poonawalla, a lawyer who filed a complaint on behalf of Nisbah at the National Commission for Minorities, said that she will ask for regulation in housing projects.

When contacted, Naseem Ahmad, chairman of the commission, said, "Shehzad Poonawalla has filed a complaint. The concerned member in charge of Maharashtra is out on tour but is expected soon. The matter will be handed to me tomorrow. The common practice is to ask the state government to probe and quickly send us a report. It is premature for me to say anything beside the fact that we will mostly follow the same procedure for this case as well. The action will be decided once the complaint reaches me."
