Shock and anger gripped Kashmir on Thursday when two youth splashed acid on the 21 year old law student disfiguring her face and eyes outside her college in Srinagar outskirts.

What happened?
Police said at 10.30 am when the girl was on her way to college, a Maruti 800 borne youth threw acid on her near at Tawheedabad-Nowshera in the Srinagar suburbs.
"Two unknown attackers threw acid on a girl near Law College in the jurisdiction of police station Soura. The attackers fled in a white Maruti car which had a sticker MANSA pasted on its rear wind screen," said a police spokesperson.

How much burns did the girl suffer?
Police said she has suffered extensive burns on her face and eyes.
"Chemical burns percentage does not matter but what matters is how deep the burns are. She has extensive burns. There is no danger to her life, but her face and eyes has been affected badly. Her right eye has been damaged. She is out of danger as per the doctors.", said a police officer.

Has the culprits been identified?
"Most of the witnesses we spoke to reported that the vehicle's windows were clouded up. Because of the cold there was condensation on the windows. Nothing was visible inside at the time of incident," said a police officer probing the matter

Has police arrested any of the suspects?
The attackers are still on the run. Police has registered a case and massive hunt has been launched to nab the culprits. "We have received the input about the vehicle. We are tracking Maruti 800 used in the crime. We have got some inputs here and there. We have alerted the police across our range and hopefully we will pin them down soon," he said.

Police has also issued a public appeal urging people to share inputs about the culprits if any. "Anybody having any information regarding the white Maruti car having a sticker Mansa pasted on its rear glass that was used by the attackers may please intimate Police Station Soura," said a police spokesman

How did people react after this incident?
Massive protests rocked capital city with students carrying banners demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and justice to the girl. "Arrest the culprits within 24 hours otherwise we will launch a massive agitation", roared Aijaz Ahmad, a student. Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah took to twitter condemning the attack. "The acid attack cannot be allowed to go unpunished. I trust the police with do everything to apprehend and severely punish culprits… This acid attack is reprehensible and no condemnation is strong enough. Attacks like this have no place in any civilised society," he tweeted.

What are the civil society groups demanding?
Centre for Youth Development (CYD) has called for a protest on December 12 at Press Enclave Srinagar. "The similar kind of protest will be held at Jantar Mantar Delhi", said M Irfan, media in-charge of CYD.

Is it the first attack?
Last year a private school teacher became the victim of the similar acid attack at Baghat-Barzulla in Srinagar outskirts. Police later arrested the culprit and the court fast tracked the matter and awarded him 10 years of imprisonment
