Days after a damning report ranked India as the worst country in the world for women, a shocking incident from Andhra Pradesh just cemented the Reuters’ verdict.

An engineering student at a private college in Andhra Pradesh was gangraped by her seniors, who also blackmailed the dastardly act to blackmail her.

According to an NDTV report, the incident took place in February last year, when the 22-year-old student was gangraped by her seniors at a birthday party after they spiked her drink.

The accused also filmed the act to blackmail her and continued to sexually abuse her for more than a year.

When the survivor approached the college management, the teachers simply told the accused to delete the video and ‘apologise’ to the girl.

In their defence, the college maintains that it didn’t approach the police as it would have tarnished the name of the girl. Meanwhile, the other two accused graduated this year.

The incident came to light, when the survivor went to police to complain about the third accused, who was trying to blackmail her and demanded Rs 10 lakh to delete the clip.

The accused, Praveen, also demanded sexual favours from her. The police soon arrested him and is on the lookout for the other two accused.

The incident comes at a time when the country is outraged over Nirbahya-like gangrape in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur.

The Reuters report

The Reuters report that was released on June 25 stated that India, Libya and Myanmar are the world's most dangerous countries for women exploited by human traffickers and forced to wed, work and sell sex.

Nigeria and Russia came joint fourth in the Thomson Reuters Foundation survey of about 550 experts in women's issues on the worst countries for women when it comes to the trade in humans.

From detention centres in Libya and curses cast by priests in Nigeria, to porous borders in Myanmar and visa abuses around the World Cup in Russia, women and girls are increasingly being targeted and trapped by traffickers using a variety of tactics.
