Former Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Kodela Siva Prasada Rao was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his Hyderabad residence on Monday. Rao, 72, was one of the seniormost leaders of the opposition TDP in the state.

At around 10.30 am at his Jubilee Hills residence, Rao's wife Shashikala got no response from the room he was in and bolted from inside. Rao's gunman was then called and the door forced opened. He was immediately rushed to the nearby Basavatarakam Memorial Cancer Hospital, where he was declared dead by doctors.

The West Zone police shifted his body to the Osmania Government General Hospital for post-mortem. According to DCP ( West Zone ) AR Srinivas, the exact cause of death cannot be ascertained, although prima facie report suggests suicide by hanging as per Rao's daughter version. "According to our initial findings, Dr Rao's wife, daughter and a maid were present at home. The gunman was called as the door was bolted from inside. We can tell the exact cause of death only after post-mortem,'' said Srinivas.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao expressed his shock at the shocking demise and in a message, conveyed his deep condolence to the family.

Soon after his death, senior TDP leaders pointed fingers at the ruling YSRCP government. "He was literally hounded to death by this ruling YSRCP government in AP. A number of cases were filed against him and his family, only to harass,'' said Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, senior TDP leader and former minister.

However, the AP government rubbished the claims and stated, "We still do not know the exact cause of death. Why and how he died will be known only after police investigation and post-mortem. Were there any family or personal problems, we don't know. How can they blame us?"

Following the autopsy, Rao's mortal remains will be taken to his native Guntur district in AP.
