Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma on Friday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of delivering 'false promises' and 'false hopes'.

"This is his tenth month as the Prime Minister of India, what has he delivered? He has delivered false promises and false hopes but nothing has moved on the ground. Manufacturing is in the negative, investments and savings are low," Sharma said.

The former union minister also alleged that the nation is currently burdened by debt.

"It is disturbing that despite the claims of turn around, the capital inflows that have come into the country are more in foreign portfolio investments and not in equity and the money which is coming in even in the portfolio investment FDI is more in the debt instruments," Sharma said.

"The country is getting more burdened by debt and the claim of the government that the balance of payment position is comfortable is not correct because if you look at the debt, they are equally exaggerated as the claim as they have got more foreign exchange reserve, you cannot claim these as reserves," he added.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who will present the General Budget on February 28, had earlier this month said the overall economic situation in the country is looking better and added that basic parameters of the Indian economy are moving in the right direction.
