The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday ordered a probe into the violence in Aligarh Muslim University but made it clear that his government will not allow any celebration in the name of Mohammed Ali Jinnah who was responsible for the partition of India.

Before leaving for campaigning in Karnataka, Yogi Adityanath said that he has already ordered a probe into the violence in Aligarh. “We are awaiting the report. The government will initiate action against those responsible for the violence,” assured the CM.

But Yogi Adityanath dropped clear hints that his government was not with those who are trying to defend or glorifying Jinnah following a controversy over his portrait hanging on the walls of the AMU Students’ Union Hall.

“How can we glorify a person who was responsible for the partition of the country? There is no question of anyone being allowed to glorify Mohammed Ali Jinnah or celebrate any event related to him in any part of the country,” said Yogi Adityanath.

“He (read Jinnah) was trying to become the Prime Minister of Independent India and when he failed in his endeavour then he sought division of the country and created Pakistan to fulfil his dream,” charged Yogi Adityanth.

The Chief Minister's tough stand on Jinnah portrai row came as a shot in the arms of the BJP leaders who are demanding removal of Jinnah's portrait from AMUSU Hall. The BJP MP from Aligarh Satish Gautam, who wrote a letter to AMU Vice-Chancellor in this regard, said that they will have to remove the portrait of Jinnah.   With AMUSU refusing to remove Jinnah’s portrait and saffron brigade out on streets, BJP is likely to make it a major issue  ahead of by-polls in the state.
