Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa was rushed to hospital on the night of September 22, 2016 after she fainted in the washroom on the first floor of her Poes Garden residence, her aide VK Sasikala said in her affidavit before the Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission which is probing the circumstances leading to Jayalalithaa's death.

The sudden demise of Jayalalithaa on December 5, 2016, after a 75-day long stay in the hospital, become a major political issue after her loyalist O Panneerselvam who revolted against Sasikala raised question over the circumstances leading to her hospitalisation. Panneerselvam and his supporters sought a CBI probe, but settled for an enquiry commission by a retired judge set up by the state government.

In the 55 page affidavit submitted to the commission on March 12, Sasikala, who for the first time revealed what led to the hospitalisation of Jayalalithaa, said that she had helped AIADMK supremo to her bed and called Dr KS Sivakumar who had examined her twice earlier in the day. Dr Sivakumar immediately called up the Apollo Hospital's for ambulance and she was taken to the hospital. The next day Jayalalithaa's health was better and she spoke, she said. Sasikala claims that when she suggested Jayalalithaa to visit the hospital earlier in the day, she refused to go.

Sasikala also claimed that Jayalalithaa had health issues after her conviction in the disproportionate assets case in September 2014 due to the stress.

In contrary to claims by AIADMK leaders that nobody except Sasikala and her relatives saw Jayalalithaa in the hospital, Sasikala said that Jayalalithaa chaired a meeting with bureaucrats — Rama Mohan Rao, Sheela Balakrishnan, Venkataraman, Ramalingam and Muthukumaraswamy on the issue of Cauvery.

She was taken unwell in the first week of September because of high blood sugar which affected her movements as well. She said that between November 2014 and September 2016 as many as 20 doctors from various private hospitals in Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata treated her.

The affidavit said that the then acting Governor, C Vidyasagar Rao, had seen Jayalalithaa twice in the hospital. Jayalalithaa had even waved at him from behind a glass wall, it noted.

Sasikala said she had given a handwritten note directing what kind of issues AIADMK MPs should rake up in the winter session of Parliament, a copy of which is in her room in Poes Garden. She said that Jayalalithaa was adamant that nobody should visit her in the hospital unless she desired and that everyone could visit her once she returned home.
