BJP national president Amit Shah, while delivering the first lecture at Bankim Chandra Chatterjee Memorial, alleged that had the Congress not broken up the national song Vande Mataram, the country would not have been divided.

"In 1947, when India became independent, they gave recognition to Vande Mataram, but not the entire song — just the first two stanzas. Appeasement policies of the Congress led to the division of the country. It is not the Muslim League's two nation policy that is responsible for the division. Congress leaders did not understand that it is not a religious song, but an effort to bind the nation with a nationalistic feeling. I have not come here to give a political speech, but it is a part of history and history is important to take the country ahead," Shah said, in his deliberation at the event organised by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation (New Delhi).

Vande Mataram was declared the national song in 1950. While the first two stanzas of the song referred to the country as a mother, later, in sync with the novel, Anandamath in which Vande Mataram was written, the country is compared to Hindu goddesses such as Durga and Lakshmi.

Earlier during the day, Shah met party senior leaders and drew a blueprint of the 2019 Lok Sabha election. State BJP leaders have drawn up a list of 22 seats. These leaders believed that BJP has a better chance of winning these seats. But Shah rejected the theory and said that the Party is going to target all 42 seats in Bengal.

Sources present at the closed door meeting with the party's election committee and also the IT Cell members at Kolkata Port Guest House said that Shah had strictly said no excuses would be tolerated. "Shah has asked to prepare for a Yatra, in all 42 constituencies, with a one 14-member committee for every three constituencies. He said it is pointless to complain about the violence unleashed by the TMC, and the rise of the BJP, unless seats are won," the source said.

Sources also said that Shah expected the party to win 50 per cent of the seats. He told workers to hit the streets regularly against the policies of the TMC government. He also assured party workers of all the help from the Centre, for their protection.

Among those present at the meeting were party MP Babul Supriyo, party state president Dilip Ghosh, Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly, state general secretary Sayantan Basu and senior party leader Mukul Roy.
