Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Tuesday expressed confidence that his party would emerge victorious in the Delhi Assembly polls, saying the people in the national capital have high expectations from the lotus.

"The BJP will win the Delhi elections for sure. Our competition is not with any other party – our competition is only with ourselves. The BJP worker needs to fight his own languor; once that is successfully defeated, we will only experience victory and no one will be able to beat us," Shah said at a gathering of BJP party workers in the national capital.

"We must resume our strategy of reaching each voter by visiting his house. As a student of politics, I feel that the people of the city only have the lotus in their minds. They have some expectations from us and they want us to work according to that," he added.

The BJP chief further said that other states in the country were also looking at Delhi to see the party's result in the upcoming elections.

"States across the country are looking to Delhi to see whether the BJP will win here. The most interested are those states which will soon have their own assembly elections – Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh," Shah said.

Delhi has been under the President's rule since February after chief minister Arvind Kejriwal stepped down after 49 days in power. Lieutenant Governor (LG) Najeeb Jung had last month sent a status report to the Ministry of Home Affairs over government formation in the capital after his consultations with leaders of the BJP, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to explore the possibility of government formation in Delhi. The LG met all the three party leaders separately.

In the meeting, all the parties expressed their inability to form the government in Delhi.
